Bridgeport Landing
Bridgeport Landing is a historic 63-acre agricultural property on the Mendocino Coast near Elk, California. Established in 1860, the property has a long history of agricultural use and today includes approximately 50 acres devoted to agricultural activities.
BluePort LLC has maintained agricultural operations at Bridgeport Landing for more than two decades, including livestock grazing, rotational grazing, irrigation infrastructure and experimental crop production. The property has an established agricultural water supply and has supported cattle, pasture and crop trials.
According to History of Mendocino and Lake Counties by Aurelius Carpenter & Percy Millberry “The narrow bench along the immediate ocean bluff of the northern part of the township (Bridgeport) is the best land in the county. It has a rich black wash loam from the high, timbered bluff back of it, and the soil is often ten and fifteen feet deep, producing large crops of grain and vegetables; potatoes, beets and carrots being largely cultivated. It is essentially a dairy country, as the feed stays green until late summer, and is supplemented by green silage of corn, beets and carrots. Corn does not mature along the coast and is only grown for silage or green feed. Phenomenal yields are often secured without fertilization”.
The shipping formerly done at Bridgeport Landing mainly by chute proved too precaurious, two vessels having been wrecked, and eventually abandoned when the operator moved north to Elk. BluePort is developing Bridgeport Landing’s next phase of agricultural use with an emphasis on higher-value specialty crops suited to the distinctive cool, foggy and wind-exposed conditions of the Mendocino Coast. Previous agricultural experience at the property has demonstrated the importance of selecting crops and production methods specifically suited to this coastal microclimate.
BluePort is also developing Bridgeport Landing as an agricultural demonstration and research site where growers, agricultural contractors and scientific and technical partners can evaluate specialty crops and sustainable production practices.
Planned research will evaluate factors including crop performance, soil conditions, water use, labor requirements, crop losses, harvest quality and economic performance.
The property is also being developed to support remote environmental monitoring of agricultural trial areas. Selected research measurements, observations and findings are intended to be made available online so growers and other agricultural stakeholders can follow research progress and apply relevant findings to their own operations.
Separate to the farming operations there is a 10 acre bluff top section separated by a secure fence for support of farming operations and guest accommodations. This section has a road to the private beach that until 1872 operated as Bridgeport Landing loading timber to ships that sailed their cargo to San Francisco.
